How To Pick an Offense

How To Pick an Offense

Most offenses are built around one concept while the rest of the concepts are built off of it.

For Saban and Kiffin, it’s the Inside Zone.

For Paul Johnson, it’s the Triple Option.

For Mike Leach, it’s Four Verticals.

I can go on and on but I’ve noticed that most of my various offenses are designed the same way: having one base play and everything is built off of it.

In my Kansas State dynasty, it was the Power Option for my Tom Osborne/Nebraska offense.

I’m both of my Duke dynasties, it was the HB Slam for my Pro Style offense and the Speed Option for my Spread Option offense.

For my Kent State dynasty, I ran my version of the Air Raid offense (I called it the Al Raid ?) where Curl Flats was my staple.

The question you have to ask yourself when deciding on which offense to use is this:

What is your favorite way to gain 3 yards?

The plays I mentioned are all meant to at least get 3 yards, as with most plays.

You need to find a base play that you know and/or at least think you would enjoy using on a consistent basis.

Then build ther rest of your offense off of that. This gives you an excuse to use most of your 9 formations since you can run your base play from all of them.

It’s a proven method to build a great offense in any game and one I highly recommend because I can attest to its usefulness.

What has been you favorite way to gain 3 yards? Let’s discuss it in the comment section and see if we can bounce ideas of one another.

Saw this on OS but am banned there {:(} so I’ll post it here. It usually depends on my offense, but my “base play” is Triple Option out of Flexbone, or IZ out of a spread. My go to play if I need a few yards are Empty Quads Bubble Screen, and then hot route the bubble to a flat route. Or I’ll go Midline QB Iso or Strong I FB Dive depending on my offense. I go Option Base 60% of the time and love to have a good accelerating FB who can hit the hole fast.

Love me some triple option and option in general. It’s so “college football” you know? When you have the right players, it can be unstoppable.

    • Al

I also think it’s interesting that you mix both the Flexbone and the Spread together.

Ever since I posted this I’ve actually been moving towards a passing base. Always struggled passing but ever since I found Dr Deaths Equalizer I’ve been dominating. By base plays have been 5WR Shallow Cross (Hot route the comeback to a curl) and WR In along with some Spread Curl Flats and Slants. Also have been running a lot of Shotgun Tight as those plays work like a charm.

      • Al

Yeah, Dr. Death is one of my favorite posters on OS and some of his offensive thinking is refreshing. The Equalizer offense is very doable in 06.

        • Rene

I know I can search for this and I tried but a lack of time keeps from searching more.

So, what is the Equalizer Offense by Dr. Death? How does it work?

          • Al

Here is the original post by Dr. Death. THE EQUALIZER

It is a 5-wide only offense that never runs the ball. Short passes are the norm while also emphasizing the importance of controlling the clock. Death by 1,000 paper cuts.

I can’t test on my emulator because I lost my bios ever since I switched over to Windows 10. I don’t have a PS3 or a PSP either.

I’m pretty good with Excel and would like to test that formula you put on OS but without the other stuff I can’t. Keep up the good work though.

If I had the spare time and money I would buy the other two systems because I think updated rosters would be more beneficial to ps2 owners than PC guys because the emulator is a tough nut to crack in order to work right.

My offenses are built around the PA Read, esp. out of the Gun Spread and Gun Trips formations. However, if I need 3 yards, I will use the Slot Screen from the Gun Trips, but will audible to the PA Read if the defense is in man. Will use HB Direct also.

    • Al

Yeah, you can’t go wrong with the PA Read. From Spread, Normal, Trips, Trips Over etc. Add some constraint plays and some concepts for your 3rd down situations then your offense is basically set.

What type of QBs do you like to recruit? I’ve had success with both types but I think a pocket passer works best for me.

  3. Tim

I have thrived with strong accurate pocket passers in the past, but am trying to involve the QB in running a little more. I am having some good success with accurate balanced QB’s, but they really do not run that much better than pocket QB’s. The scrambling QB’s are fun to run with, but they throw way too many interceptions for my taste (I had to use one when my top three QB’s went down with injury one season). All-in-all, I am beginning to agree with you that accuracy and strength are more important than speed as long as you have a fast RB or two. Also, less scrambling cuts down on injuries.

    • Al

I’ve had success both ways. The PA Read is so universal. That and all of the PA Read plays work, you can just match your formations with your personnel and you’re good to go.

      • Tim

Do you have a lot of success with the QB Choice play?
It works if I hand it off to the HB, but when I have to run with the QB, I struggle to get back to the line of scrimmage.

        • jack mayo

Gotta have acceleration with the qb if it’s better than 78 your good just gotta read the blocks

        • Al

I treat Choice as a Veer play. With the veer from the Gun in real life, the HB is meant to go off-tackle while the QB is meant to go between the tackles. The success of this play in 06 hinges on two things: is the defense in Mano or Zone and the shift of the defensive line. Here is my rule of thumb for the main four situations.

(Note the Strongside shift means the line shifts towards the side where the HB is running off-tackle to, not the side he is standing initially.)

Man/Strong = HB – this is how you defend choice. neither player can get much yardage from this so you might as well give it to your HB so your QB doesn’t get killed
Man/Weak = HB or QB – the perfect scenario for you. The HB should have plenty of room to run outside or keep it with your QB and follow your HB so he can block for you
Man/No Shift = HB – it’s really up to you but bit’s best to let your HB handle this one
Zone/Strong = QB – your HB will probably get stuff so keep it qith your QB and only run between the tackles. NO SPEED BUTTON, Let your blocks develop
Zone/Weak = HB – no speed button needed, just follow your blocks as their can be multiple holes open, both in and outside the tackle box
Zone/No Shift = HB – it’s up to you really but when in doubt, just let your HB handle this one

The one thing you should never do is keep it with your QB and run the opposite direction. The play in 06 is designed to do so but just isn’t effective.

Here very soon I will start posting videos on all of this stuff so stay tuned!!!!

This was a great post, and it certainly affects how I approach this game (or any NCAA game for that matter).

I’m having a blast with PA Read for my Spread Pass offense using ECU. My only wish with using the Baylor attack is that having a screen pass play out of base spread would;ve been fantastic. Although resorting to 5 wide Dbl Screen ain’t too bad!

Right now I’m running an OK State team doing a hodgepodge of offenses and having a real fun time exploring new plays I never used. Spread Option is the focus, but I’m adding Singleback/Ace runs and some Tom Osborne option for under center play. I’m also doing a sub formation to emulate the wildcat out of Shotgun ace. I’m looking forward towards recruiting for this team!

    • Alex

Also forgot to mention I’ve just about made the Full House form my permanent inches and goal line form. That’s one of the main reasons I started this OK State team was how I see them use this in their games.

      • Al

Awesome stuff, Alex. Let me know if you need any help with that.

    • Al

WR Screen from Trips works well, both from y-trips and from standard trips. I use both all the time in all of my spread offenses.

      • Alex

That’s been my go to screen play. I’ve also used the Flanker Screen from Y trips with some success.

        • Al

Too bad there isn’t a WR screen from Gun Spread, a lot of good plays from that set

  5. Rene

I’ve been playing my cupcake team using a “run and shoot” concept. I mainly run out of the Ace Spread. My run to pass ratio is like 70-30. I’ll try and describe what I do later on but I think it’s a good offense to run for a cupcake team.

    • Al

My Ace Spread offense is a blast to use too. With Home Field Advantage off, you can use all of your audibles effectively. I’d love to hear more about your offense.

  6. My offense runs the Ace 2 TE set – HB Dive to the left. From there, I usually bounce it outside.

I then usually run a hurry up offense to run the exact same play or I can audible into either: speed option left, HB option right, A regular pass, or Play Action with the right or (Strong side) TE running down the right sideline. I usually keep the left or (weak side) TE in to block.

    • Al

Nice little scheme there. Ace Normal is the best formation the in game in my opinion. 14/18 plays in the formation work great and cover all of your basis.

  7. Steve

    My playbook:

    Flexbone Slot
    Strong Twins
    I-Form Normal
    I-Form Slot
    Ace-Big TE WR
    Ace Spread
    Gun Normal
    Gun Bunch
    Gun Spread

I like to run slams, triple option and speed options. Curl Flats are my staple to move the ball if the running game isn’t working. I love the HB Angle plays as well. I use alot of hot-routes depending on the coverage to exploit one on ones to my deep routes. I rarely go deep in fact I probably should more than I do.
