HB Direct and the Single Wing Offense

HB Direct and the Single Wing Offense

The HB Direct play is considered by many to be a cheese play that almost guarantees big plays at any time.

It is an effective concept, but it can be stopped.

The main reason for this is because the HB Direct is a Single Wing concept in disguise.

The Single Wing Offense is an amazing offense, and its concepts are still used today, abliet they are are a little harder to spot.

If you combine the HB Direct with QB Choice and Speed Option along with some heavier sub packages, you have the makings of an unstoppable offense.

I just started a dynasty with Rice in which my offense is the Single Wing and I’m having a blast with it.

Don’t be afraid to use HB Direct. The concept is deadly because it is designed to be, just ask Pop Warner.

Do you use the Shotgun Split and Gun Two Back Slot mainly for this or do you use any of the gun formations?

All of the Gun formations are viable for several types of offenses.

Split has some neat run plays and some really good passing plays, especially for the TE.

The only issue I have with both formations is that the OL pass blocks instead of run blocks for those option plays which makes no sense. They still work but would work even better if the OL blocked correctly.

Split Slot is my favorite of the two due to the nice stable of pass plays, enough good ones to where you can run an entire passing game out of it.

Is that what you are using for the single wing then?
It seems to come closest to the actual single wing formation.

If I was running Single Wing, the Split would be one of my 9 formations.

For Speed Option and Power Option plays, I would motion the HB from the direction I intend to run to and towards that way again Zone. That way you basically have your QB running Power. That might sound weird but motioning the HB away from the QB on option plays work really well but not game breaking by any means.

I don’t look at the Single Wing as a formation or look per se but only the concepts behind it. So don’t be afraid to use other Gun formations to get the job done.

Gun formations, Speed Option, HB Direct, and motion to gain a numbers advantage ate all you need to make the Single Wing work.

I run most of my offense out of the gun and use the PA Read for most of my running. This should help add some more running options. Thanks,

I would use Speed Option, HB Direct, QB Choice, and PA Read. Those 4 from your favorite Gun formations should do the trick.

Not too long ago I played a game as Rice (terrible team) and ran the Single Wing. I had over 400 rushing yards on 5 minute quarters. I just used numbers to my advantage and shuffled through those 4 concepts. Recruiting for this offense is dead simple too.
